Johnny Depp makes Trump assassination joke

Clearly learning nothing from Kathy Griffin’s recent controversy, Johnny Depp has made an "assassination" joke about US President Donald Trump. Watch it below.

Appearing onstage at the Glastonbury festival in the UK, the 54-year-old actor was originally presenting his film The Libertine to the crowd, but in a video posted to YouTube by NME, he’s seen turning the conversation to US politics.

He pointed out that Trump “needs help”, before asking the audience: "When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?"

The joke could be a reference to John Wilkes Booth, the disgruntled actor who killed US President Abraham Lincoln in 1885.

BBC News reports that the actor acknowledged that his gag could be taken the wrong way.

"This is going to be in the press and it'll be horrible," the publication quotes him as saying.

"It's just a question, I'm not insinuating anything."

Comedian Kathy Griffin was slammed earlier this month for a graphic Trump-related photoshoot which saw her holding on “Trump’s” severed head.

The gory and shocking image, by photographer Tyler Shields, instantly drew some serious outrage.

She has since taken the images down and said in a video she sincerely apologises after seeing the reaction.

"I'm a comic, I cross the line. I move the line and then I cross it. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing, I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny, I get it," she said in the video posted to her Twitter account.

"I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career. I will continue. I've taken down the image, going to ask the photographer to take down the image, and I beg for your forgiveness. I was wrong."
