Lily Collins criticised for To the Bone weight loss

Lily Collins has opened up about how magazines refused to feature her after she lost a dramatic amount of weight for her role in To The Bone.

The 28-year-old actress, who stars in the upcoming Netflix flick which revolves around a young woman's eating disorder, told The Edit that publications refused to photograph her, claiming she was "too thin".

"I was about to embark on press for Rules Don’t Apply and I was told that a lot of media did not want to put me in their magazines. Not just on the cover – they wouldn’t put me inside looking the way I did, even though it was for a movie," Lily told the outlet.

Lily, who has previously opened up about her struggles with body image and eating disorders as a teenager, said the publications' refusal to include her was upsetting at the time since it was for a role and not personal choice.

"No one knew my connection to the disorder, and at the time I was super upset because I thought, this is a huge moment for me and I can’t maximize on it. But it hit me – 'Oh, this is going to majorly f*** with your career now, not just your health,'" she added.

"I told my publicist that if I could snap my fingers and gain ten pounds right that second, I would give anything to do that. I never thought I’d ever say anything like that! This cannot keep me from what I’ve always wanted."

While some magazines criticised her for the weight loss, Lily went on to say her thinner frame was also met with mixed reactions, with a family friend even complimenting her.

"I was leaving my apartment one day and someone I've known for a long time, my mom's age, said to me, 'Oh, wow, look at you!'

"I tried to explain [I had lost weight for a role] and she goes, 'No! I want to know what you're doing, you look great!' I got into the car with my mom and said, 'That is why the problem exists.'"

The actress also revealed how some scenes in the controversial film were like real-life therapy sessions for her, given her history with the subject.

"There’s a scene in the film when we’re in group therapy talking about the euphoria we experience – I’d never heard that weird enjoyment we feel from being in the disorder worded that way before – and in that moment, you caught Lily understanding it as opposed to just Ellen, my character."
