Harley Breen spills on Em Rusciano and life as a funny dad
He’s known best for being Em Rusciano’s sidekick on 2DayFM's breakfast show.
But behind radio-host Harley Breen’s cracking sense of humour, is a doting dad who loves to keep it real when talking about dadhood.
“Walter is five-months-old and he’s already exposing his personality,” he excitedly tells Be. “And I have the most hilarious moments with my eldest boy. What’s not to love about being a dad?”
Since Harley hit the airwaves alongside Em, the Sydney breakfast show – which previously belonged to axed Rove and Sam – has gained 33,000 new female listeners, something that's surely down to all the LOL's he gives listeners when spilling the deets on his comical #dadlife.
“I’m constantly surprised at how much women in general love hearing about what a dad thinks about the parenting process,” he says. “I think the appeal is that they are maybe in situations where they’re not hearing a man talk about it so that's why they enjoy it.”
Harley, who is dad to Leonard, seven, as well as little Walter, admits and understands that “dad’s are usually silent creatures” which is part of this stand-up comedian’s charm.
Of course, the comic can’t resist sharing rib-tickling tales about his kids.
“Walter is a very happy baby but he’s doing this really disturbing thing where he wakes up in the night as all babies do 'cause they’re d**kheads,” Harley laughs. “But he’ll wake up and start giggling. It’s really psychotic.”
Before his radio days, Harley, 37, was a single dad to Leonard, but recently became engaged to his partner of three years, Hannah.
“I enjoy home life now because after spending 16 years touring, I’m exhausted,” he explains. “I just wanted to set down some roots and be able to tend to a garden.”
His rather wholesome family life in the country is a far cry from his beer guzzling days on the road, but he assures us he’s still a ‘dirty’ comic – something he and co-host Em have in common.
“Neither of us have a filter,” he admits. “But we both trust each other that if we start talking, it’ll go somewhere. It’ll be fine. If it doesn’t, what's the worst that’s going to happen?”
