WATCH: Chris Brown opens up about the night he assaulted Rihanna
It has been eight years since Chris Brown’s brutal assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna and now the rapper has revealed his side of events from that night.
In the clip above from his upcoming documentary Chris Brown: Welcome To My Life, the 28-year-old speaks about the night that changed everything in his relationship and his career.
From his version of events, Brown says the disagreement escalated due to a message from a former lover of the rapper’s which set Rihanna off.
He had sexual history with this unknown woman which he failed to disclose to his girlfriend straight away and it upset her.
The rapper’s admission to Rihanna about this woman is what he claims was when his relationship went downhill and also when it turned violent.
“My trust was totally lost with her – she hated me. After that I tried everything, like, she didn’t care. From there it just went downhill because it would be fights, it would be verbal fights, physical as well,” he admitted.
However according to him it was “mutual sides” in all these fights.
He goes on to say: “I still love Rihanna, but I’m just going to be honest – we would fight each other, she would hit me, I would hit her, but it never was OK. It was always a point to where we talk about it like, ‘What the f**k are we doing?'”
On the fateful night which changed everything, Brown had received a text from the woman in question saying that she “would see him later” and Rihanna had opened it, completely infuriated.
Brown had previously asked this woman to stop contacting him and stop attending events he was going to.
Rihanna started shouting “I hate you!” to her boyfriend and was “fighting” him.
The singer was continually hitting him and even tried to “kick” him at one point.
But then Brown hit back, hard.
He recalled the incident saying: “With a closed fist, like I punched her, and it busted her lip, and when I saw it I was in shock, I was like ‘f**k, why did I hit her like that?’”
“So from there she’s… spitting blood in my face, it raised me even more. It’s a real fight in the car, and we driving in the street,” he added.
On March 5, 2009 he was charged with felony assault but at first pleaded not guilty.
Eventually Brown did plead guilty and was granted a plea deal of community labour, five years probation and required to attend domestic violence counselling.

Rihanna opened up about the situation in 2012 on Oprah’s Next Chapter saying: “I lost my best friend – like everything I knew switched in a night and I couldn’t control that".
The couple did reunite for a brief period from 2012 to 2013 but ended things in May of that year.
In an interview for Vanity Fair in 2015, the 29-year-old singer admitted she thought she would be able to change Brown.
“I was that girl who felt that, as much pain as this relationship is, maybe some people are built stronger than others,” she told the magazine. “Maybe I’m one of those people built to handle [things] like this.”
