Miranda Tapsell's same-sex marriage stance

Actress Miranda Tapsell has spoken out in support of same-sex marriage, following the Australian Government's announcement of a postal plebiscite on the issue.

Speaking to Be, the 30-year-old Love Child star says: "What I’m really wanting now is for everyone to have the chance to get married".

The Logie award-winning television personality says her own Indigenous Australian character in the Channel Nine drama faces obstacles in getting married as she's from a "minority" group, and therefore she empathises with the LGBTQI community.

"I’ve still got a lot to learn about the LGBTQI community and I’m really wanting to listen to what they have to say," she explains.

"But coming from another minority where Martha lived in a time where it wasn’t really, she wasn’t really legitimised, there was a bigger challenge to Martha getting married that she was going to have to live with," Miranda tells Be.

In the popular drama starring the likes of Jessica Marais and Mandy McElhinney, Miranda's character Martha chooses to marry Caucasian doctor Simon, played by Andy Ryan.

"I guess I really want people to be able to [get married], because this is the thing, the whole message of the Martha and Simon story is that they just want to live the life that they want and I think that’s what most couples [want', whether they’re hetro or not," she says.

"Members of the LGBTQI community deserve that right as well. Their relationships deserve to be legitimised and their lives and happiness deserves to be taken more seriously by the wider society."

Set in Sydney's Kings Cross in the 1960s and 1970s, Love Child's fourth season is now out on DVD.
