Kate Winslet defends working with Woody Allen

It appears Kate Winslet will work with just about anyone – as long as the material is right.

Case in point: Woody Allen.

While never convicted of a sex crime, the public perception of Woody is less than favourable.

In 1992 Woody’s former partner Mia Farrow accused the director of sexually abusing their seven-year-old adopted daughter Dylan. It’s an accusation Woody has repeatedly denied.

Although not illegal, in 1997 Woody married Soon-Yi Previn, who was Mia’s adopted daughter He was 62 at the time while she was 27. The marriage only added to the public’s unease.

Despite never being convicted of a crime, actors have continually felt the need to defend themselves for appearing in his films. The latest being Kate.

Speaking to the New York Times, Kate said she didn’t hesitate in taking on a role in Woody's new film Wonder Wheel despite being aware of the scandals surrounding the director.

“Of course one thinks about [the scandal]. But at the same time, I didn’t know Woody and I don’t know anything about that family,” Kate said.

“As the actor in the film, you just have to step away and say, I don’t know anything, really, and whether any of it is true or false. Having thought it all through, you put it to one side and just work with the person.”

The 41-year-old actress called working with Allen a “now or never” experience, so she jumped at the offer.

“Plus I knew my parents would be incredibly proud of me working with Woody Allen,” she added.
