The furore erupted after it emerged that Macklemore would be performing his marriage equality anthem at the event to coincide with Australia’s current same-sex plebiscite.

Many, including Tony Abbott, slammed the rapper saying that performing the song would “politicise” the game.

But Grill Team host Gus Worland has taken aim at the critics calling them a “bunch of whingers”. “The song is about basic human rights,” Gus said.

“We used to look at the poms and go: ‘What a bunch of whingers,’” he declared. “I’ll tell you what I spent a lot of time in England, spent a lot of time back here. We’re worse.”

Fellow co-host Matty Johns also chimed in discussing the current same-sex marriage postal survey and the $120 million that was spent on it.

“When we know we can spend that $120 million in so many other avenues and help so many other people. What a load of crap that it’s come to this,” he said.

“It’s interesting actually cause I’m gonna play ‘Same Love’ and they’re going through trying to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia,” the 34-year-old explained.

“I’m getting a lot of tweets from angry, old white dudes in Australia. Today I think there is a petition to ban me from playing it,” Macklemore – real name Benjamin Haggerty – said.

In response to those “angry, old white dudes” the rapper simply said: “I’mma go harder.”

He’s not backing down despite nearly 9000 people signing former NRL player Tony Wall’s petition to “remove LGBTIQ politics out of the awesome sport of Rugby League.”

“My family and many other loyal NRL fans, who are No votes, will not feel comfortable watching the Grand Final when the NRL is imposing such a bold political stance on its fans while the issue is currently being voted on by the Australian people,” the ex-NRL player writes.
