Macklemore's 'Same Love' storms the charts again

Amid the controversy over his decision to play his "gay anthem" Same Love at the NRL grand final, Macklemore may see his 2012 tune back at the top of the charts.

After a petition started circulating on Thursday in an effort to stop the rapper performing, Same Love has soared straight back to number one on the Australian iTunes chart.

The 34-year-old took to Twitter on Friday morning to share the news, saying "love is winning".

"Yesterday someone started a petition in Australia to ban me from playing Same Love at the #NRLGF. Today its #1 on iTunes. Love is winning," Macklemore tweeted.

At the time of its release five years ago, the song was adopted as an anthem for supporters of same-sex marriage in the US and went to number one in Australia and New Zealand and also reached No. 11 on the American Billboard charts.

The current revival in the charts means Macklemore has three songs in the top 20 charts, including his current No.1 hit Good Old Days with Kesha, while Glorious with Skylar Greyis is sitting at No. 10.

Despite the controversary Macklemore's decision to perform the song appears to be making, said he's going to go "harder" with the more opposition he faces.

The singer responded to the furore over the song choice in an interview in the US.

"I’m actually going out to Australia to perform at kind of the Super Bowl of their rugby league," he told US radio show The Cruz Show.

"And it’s interesting actually cause I’m gonna play Same Love and they’re going through trying to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia. So I’m getting a lot of tweets from angry old white dudes in Australia. Today I think there is a petition to ban me from playing.

"It’s interesting times in Australia and I’m heading on a flight over there later tonight. I’m gonna go harder," he added.
