Lisa Wilkinson revealed her shock departure from Channel Nine’s Today show last night and allegedly her split from the network wasn’t totally amicable.
Despite the messages of support she received from her former colleagues Karl Stefanovic, Sylvia Jeffreys and Richard Wilkins live on air this morning, behind closed doors relations between Lisa and Channel Nine are frosty.
Speaking on KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O Show, entertainment journalist Peter Ford revealed that the 57-year-old’s access card was cancelled almost straight away.
“They said they love Lisa but it didn’t stop them cancelling her swipe card at 5.05!” Peter told the radio duo.
The alleged reason the host left was over salary issues because Lisa was not paid the same as her co-host Karl, the reporter commented.
However, Nine bosses were not aware Lisa had another option up her sleeve.
“Everything just collapsed,” the journalist said. “What they didn’t realise is she had a plan B.”
“Now, it gets complicated because Karl did his contract a couple of years ago when he has a rock-solid offer from the Channel Seven Network,” he explained.
Lisa reportedly earned $1.1 million a year before her shock exit on Monday, while 43-year-old co-host Karl reportedly earns at least $2 million per year, with a potential bonus that would round off his salary to almost $3 million depending on ratings.
The Daily Telegraph reported that Nine offered Lisa $1.8 million per year but that wasn’t enough to keep her around.
Lisa will be joining Channel Ten’s nightly news and current affairs program, The Project.
