Matt Lauer could lose $9.2 million NZ farm
US Today Show host Matt Lauer may miss out on a property purchase in New Zealand as a result of the sexual misconduct allegations that have emerged against him.
NBC news fired the veteran presenter this week when a female colleague accused him of “inappropriate sexual behaviour” towards her.
The 59-year-old has since issued a public apology saying he was "truly sorry" for the hurt he caused, but it appears there could still be more major repercussions from the alleged misconduct.
Lauer is currently in the process of purchasing a $9.2 million cattle farm in New Zealand's South Island.
But part of the conditions of the buy include a requirement that foreign investors needed to be “of good character” and the country's overseas investment regulator has confirmed they will be seeking further information on Lauer.
According to the claims, the misconduct started when Matt Lauer and a fellow employee were at the Sochi Olympics in 2014 and continued once back in New York.
NBC said in a statement that while it was the first complaint lodged against longtime presenter, they “we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident”.
Since news of the story broke, old footage of Lauer has emerged of him making lewd comments towards a former colleague where he asks her to "bend over" as "it's a nice view".
Hollywood is caught in the grip of a sex scandal that started when the New York Times ran an exposé alleging movie mogul Harvey Weinstein abused his position of power in the industry for 30 years.
