Russell Crowe presents inaugural Best Asian Film Award at AACTAs

Russell Crowe proudly took to the stage on Wednesday night at the 2017 AACTA Awards to present the first ever Best Asian Film Award.

 

As the President of the grand jury, the 53-year-old actor told the live audience at The Star that it was a "daunting task" to judge nine films from India, China, South Korea, Japan and the Philippines.

The recipient of the award was Bollywood movie Dangal, with star Sakshi Tanwar having travelled from India to accept the gong on stage.

The winner was selected by a jury of eight, which also included Bollywood stars Anupam Kher and Shabana Azmi, South Korean director and producer Kim Ki-Duk, Chinese actor Ye Liu, producers Gary Kurtz and Adam Torel, as well as Australian film critic, producer and presenter Margaret Pomeranz AM.

Speaking to Be on the red carpet before the awards night, veteran Indian actor Anupam Kher said each of the nominated films were of great merit.

"We finalised nine films and all of them are fantastic. All of them, according to me, are winners, but the jury had to choose one... that doesn't mean the other eight aren't fantastic," he said.

The nine nominated films were Birdshot (Philippines), Dangal (India), I Am Not Madame Bovary, (China), Kassav: Turtle (India), Our Time Will Come (China), Pink (India), Train To Busan (South Korea), Wolf Warrior II (China) and Your Name (Japan).
