Australian same-sex marriage legalised: Ellen DeGeneres leads congrats

The long-awaited moment has finally come and now same-sex marriage has been legalised in Australia. Many celebrities from around the world have reacted.

Ellen DeGeneres, who is married to Aussie actress Portia De Rossi, led the congratulations on social media saying was "cheering for everyone in Australia".

"Equality just took a giant step forward," the 59-year-old host wrote. "I’m cheering for everyone in Australia today."

Australian pop queen Kylie Minogue also took to Twitter to express her happiness over the result.

Kylie's sister, Dannii Minogue, also celebrated.

Many other celebrities including Tim Minchin and Ricki Lee also reacted to the same-sex legalisation on social media.


Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull made a harrowing statement on Twitter saying it was time for "more marriages, more commitment and more love".

The bill passed in Parliament on Thursday with a resounding majority in favour.

There were 145 votes in favour and just four votes against.

What a historic day for Australia and all Australians. Love is love and love has won.
