Margot Robbie is getting high marks for disappearing underneath the skin of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in the highly anticipated flick I, Tonya.
Now the Aussie actress has revealed exclusively to Yahoo Entertainment, the secret behind her incredible transformation.
“I worked a lot with a movement coach to alter my physicality and create certain mannerisms for the character of Tonya,” Margot said. “I also studied her a lot. Studied her mannerisms, her voice, her dialect."
The 27-year-old from the Gold Coast, who shot to fame after her role in Wolf of Wall Street, went on to explain that she also undertook dramatic physical alterations too.
"Our hair and makeup and costume designers did a ton of work replicating all the skate costumes and specific moments taken from paparazzi shots and mapped out a journey in that way ” she said.
The movie is based on the true story of American figure skater Tonya Harding, whose skating career ended in 1994 after her associates infamously attacked rival Olympian Nancy Kerrigan.
As she rose to prominence from lower-class Oregon in the early ’90s, Margot revealed the the film’s stylists worked very hard to source specific items for her throughout the role.
“Our hair and makeup designers only brought products from cheap strip malls,” she revealed. “It had to be something that Tonya could’ve gotten her hands on at the time. Everyone really threw themselves into this character and helped create this character.”
Margot, who is married to Tom Ackerley, has already been tipped for an Oscar for her performance in I, Tonya.
She recently hit the headlines after biting back at a journalist who asked her about her married life whilst promoting the flick, telling them, "Being married is not my achievement."
I, Tonya hits the cinemas early next year. Watch the trailer below.
