Meryl Streep to Melania and Ivanka Trump: 'Speak now'

Meryl Streep is a proud supporter of the fight against sexual misconduct in Hollywood.

She publicly slammed disgraced Harvey Weinstein's alleged behaviour towards women, has vowed to wear black in an act of solidarity at this weekend's Golden Globe awards and just yesterday, she donated $500,000 to the Time's Up campaign.

Now the Mamma Mia star has called for two of America's most influential women to join the fight and break their silence, Melania and Ivanka Trump.

In a candid interview with the New York Times, the two-time Oscar winner said she wanted to hear from the Whitehouse's leading ladies.

"I want to hear about the silence of Melania Trump," she said. "I want to hear from her. She has so much that’s valuable to say. And so does Ivanka. I want her to speak now.”

Meryl, 68, also addressed the criticism she faced for taking three days to speak out against Weinstein when the scandal first broke.

“I don’t have a Twitter thing or – handle, whatever. And I don’t have Facebook," she said, explaining she went home to think "deep into my own life."

"I really had to think," she added. "Because it really underlined my own sense of cluelessness, and also how evil, deeply evil, and duplicitous, a person he was, yet such a champion of really great work."

Despite the scandal engulfing the movie industry and it shining a light on the issue of power abuse and sexual harassment worldwide, President Donald Trump's First lady and his daughter have both remained tight-lipped.
