Cate Blanchett jokes about playing Melania Trump

Cate Blanchett has tackled some huge characters throughout her career, most recently portraying the first female villain in a Marvel movie.

But the Hollywood heavyweight couldn't keep a straight face when asked if she would ever portray America's First Lady, Melania Trump.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Cate, 48, joked she would be unlikely to take such a gig.

“If I was playing Melania Trump — not that I would probably be cast in that role — I wouldn’t be necessarily coming from the place of ‘Free Melania’,” she said to a highly amused audience.

However, the Oscar winner confirmed she would take the casting seriously, making sure she portrayed Melania as true as possible.

“I’d be trying to understand the situation so that you could then throw that back at an audience," she said. "What’s her position as a woman? What does she think? What’s it like being married to — you know.”

Cate, who is a goodwill ambassador for the UN’s refugee agency, was taking part in a serious discussion about refugees in which President Donald Trump has involvement.

A TV series of the Trump White House has been rumoured to be in the works, but no official word has been made.

But if it does get the go-ahead, we're sure Cate will be getting a call.
