Exclusive: Jessica Chastain on Weinstein's 'abuse'

She’s one of the most passionate supporters of the Time’s Up movement.

Now Jessica Chastain has revealed exactly why she’s been fighting for the cause, telling Be exclusively that it was her “responsibility” to support those speaking out.

Talking ahead of her latest movie release, Molly’s Game, the actress praised Rose McGowan, Annabella Sciorra and Rosanna Arquette for coming forward with allegations against the now disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

“It’s almost a responsibility, when someone like Annabella Sciorra, Rose McGowan or Rosanna Arquette have… taken a lot to step forward and speak out against a person whose abused them and used their power to abuse,” she said. “And so I feel like it’s my responsibility to support that courage and that bravery.”

Jessica, 40, has been praised for being vocal about the issue — which first engulfed Hollywood in the wake of the Weinstein scandal in October last year — using her Twitter account to share stories and share a message of female solidarity with her 700k followers.

“I’m using whatever platform I have to amplify the courage of others,” she said. “I don’t see myself as kind of very brave or very loud, you know.”

In fact, it’s not just through her social media pages the Miss Sloane star is campaigning for change.

Through her character Molly Bloom, the real-life “poker princess” who ran exclusive poker games for a celebrity clientele, Jessica poses interesting questions about masculinity, wealth and power, and it couldn’t be more timely in Hollywood.

“It’s a story of one woman, Molly Bloom, but it’s also important to me when I’m telling a story, and I’m making a film that it resonates with all women,” she said. “It’s a story of all women and this film really explores patriarchy and what it’s like to work in an industry where these very powerful men are creating all the rules.”

Rose McGowan, 44, has accused Weinstein of raping her, in an incident which dates back to the Sundance Film Festival in 1997, where Weinstein’s former company Miramax was working on the release of the horror movie Scream.

Actress Annabella Sciorra also claims she was raped by the producer, telling the New Yorker he barged his way into her apartment in the 1990s and sexually assaulted her.

Rosanna Arquette alleged Weinstein attempted to sexually assault her in the ’90s, but after she refused his advances he sabotaged her career by badmouthing her to producers and directors around town as a “pain in the ass”.

Molly’s Game hits cinemas around Australia on February 1st.
