Oprah thinks Reese had PTSD after Weinstein scandal

Oprah Winfrey has admitted that in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal she feels Reese Witherspoon suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The pair had been filming their new flick A Wrinkle In Time together at the time with the allegations of sexual harassment and assault against Weinstein first emerged.

Oprah spoke about her co-star's reaction following the emergence of the allegations on her Super Soul Sunday Conversation podcast with actress Salma Hayek.

"I was on set with Reese Witherspoon, who has since spoken out, and some other actresses who haven't spoken out, so I won't say who they were," she began, "and this was like two days after the Harvey Weinstein scandal had broken in the New York Times.

"Everyone, including Reese - I've said this to her - was acting like, I was seeing some of the girls at my school behave who were suffering from PTSD. Everybody was acting like they were afraid and they were having the conversation."

The former chat show host recalls Reese admitting to not being able sleep and 'tearing up every time' somebody brought up Weinstein.

"And I remember Reese saying, 'Oh god, this is just so upsetting. And someone mentions his name, I start tearing up. And everytime I hear someone else speak, it just causes me to be upset and I haven't slept in two days,'" Oprah explained on the podcast.

"So I said, 'Jeez, you guys are suffering from PTSD. Did something happen to you?' Nobody said anything at the time," the 64-year-old said.

Reese herself has been open about her own experience of sexual assault in the industry.

She spoke out in October last year at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards about an incident which happened to her when she was 16.

"We live a lot of ugly truths," she began. "I have my own experiences that come back to me very vividly and I find it very hard to believe and hard to communicate a lot of the feelings that I’ve been having.

"The anxiety about being honest, the guilt about not speaking up earlier, or taking action. True disgust at the director who assaulted me when I was 16 years old, anger that I felt at the agents and producers who made me feel that silence was a condition of my employment."

Many in Hollywood including Angelina Jolie, Keira Knightley, Cara Delevingne and many more have shared their stories of sexual harassment, assault and misconduct following the allegations which emerged last year.
