Three Billboards dominates BAFTA wins

While Shape of Water had a whopping 12 BAFTA nominations this year, it was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri that stole the show with five wins.

The flick took home the top trophies of the event, including best film, best British film and best actress for Frances McDormand.

Their triumph is particularly poignant with the Time's Up! movement — which was honoured today with the stars wearing black — as the movie tells the story of a woman seeking justice for her daughter's murder.

Three Billboards also won Best Original Screenplay, and Sam Rockwell earned the fifth award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

However it wasn't just stories of female empowerment that won over the industry's top judges, with Gary Oldman taking home the Best Actor title for 2018 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.

Despite having the most nominations of the evening, fantasy romance The Shape of Water took three trophies, most notably Guillermo Del Toro winning best director.

Allison Janney took home the Best Supporting Actress gong for her part in I, Tonya but sadly Aussie favourite Margot Robbie failed to score a famous gold mask.
