The swan dress even came with a bag shaped like an egg, which the singer put on the ground as if she’d just laid it. She may not have won an Oscar that year, but she made history all the same!

To prove it, he interrupted his own speech to do one-armed push-ups on the stage. Go, Jack!

She was up against more respected “serious” actresses like Vanessa Redgrave and Judy Davis and she had only won an MTV Movie Award in the lead-up to the Oscars. The worst was this bizarre cross-dressing situation. The Academy went old-school the following year and got legendary host Billy Crystal back in the saddle. Phew!

Rawley had kept his sexuality private until that point – but unlike the film, it turned out he actually gave Tom permission to out him.

Well, you might not know that it’s based on a true story – and that Tom Hanks was the outer! He thanked his high school drama coach Rawley Farnsworth in his Best Actor acceptance speech for Philadelphia, calling him “a gay American” in his speech. Rawley had kept his sexuality private until that point – but unlike the film, it turned out he actually gave Tom permission to out him.
  • No one will ever forget Roberto Benigni, the Italian actor and director whose film Life is Beautiful won him Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor trophies. When his fellow Italian Sophia Loren announced “Roberto!” as the winner of the former, he leapt up onto his chair, raced around the room shaking A-listers’ hands, and generally just had the most delightful celebration ever!

Instead of calling the Broadway star by her actual name, he very solemnly called her “Adele Dazeem”. But Idina wasn’t mad – as the song says, she, uh, “Let it Go”. Instead of calling the Broadway star by her actual name, he very solemnly called her “Adele Dazeem”. But Idina wasn’t mad – as the song says, she, uh, “Let it Go”. They presented together the following year (pictured) and he awkwardly grabbed her face. Just settle down, John-Boy!
