The 42-year-old actress filed for divorce after an alleged incident involving Brad and the couple's eldest son Maddox on a private flight. Ange later released a statement saying "for the health of the family" the couple would be separating after 12 years together and two years of marriage.
Brad reportedly agreed to undergo "drug and alcohol testing" even though it "wasn't required" while he and Ange battled out a custody agreement over their brood. Brad was cleared of all allegations of child abuse by authorities.
Things turned nasty for the couple, with Ange being temporarily granted full custody while Brad maintains visitation rights over their children Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 11 and nine-year-twins Vivienne, and Knox.
By December 2016 as the couple's court proceedings grew nastier, the 53-year-old actor filed emergency paperwork to a LA court requesting documents were sealed in an effort to keep the details private and to "protect the privacy" of their kids.
By January 2017 the couple finally reached an agreement to keep their divorce behind closed doors releasing a statement saying: "The parties and their counsel have signed agreements to preserve the privacy rights of their children and family by keeping all court documents confidential and engaging a private judge to make any necessary legal decisions and to facilitate the expeditious resolution of any remaining issues. The parents are committed to act as a united front to effectuate recovery and reunification."
After avoiding the limelight for months, Brad made a surprise appearance at the Golden Globes, receiving a standing ovation and applause from his Hollywood pals, as it looked like Tinsel Town was well and truly #TeamBrad.
Meanwhile Ange's attempt to paint Brad as an unfit father failed, with Brad hitting out at his wife saying she was "determined to ignore even agreed upon standards relating to the children's best interests" in court documents.
Amid concerns for his heath, Brad spoke out for the first time in a revealing GQ profile back in May, saying his addictions played a role in his marriage to Angelina ending, while admitting at the time he had been sober for six months.
The actress spoke out in her own revealing profile interview, telling Vanity Fair "things got bad" by the end of 2016 in marriage: "I didn’t want to use that word... Things became 'difficult,'" she said, adding her children were "brave". "We’re all just healing from the events that led to the filing... They’re not healing from divorce. They’re healing from some... from life, from things in life."
