Avengers Stars Forced To Apologise After Calling Black Widow A 'Slut' In Interview

Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner have released a statement apologising for calling Scarlett Johannson’s character Black Widow a “slut” and “whore” in a promotional interview for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Evans’ read: "Yesterday we were asked about the rumours that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologise.”

Renner said: “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone,” his statement reads. “It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”

In the interview for Digital Spy, the duo were asked if their characters would ever get together with Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson.

“She’s a slut,” Renner said. Evans added: “I was going to say something along that line, she’s a complete whore… She’ll flirt with anybody… leading everybody on.”

The video quickly went viral on Twitter, with many fans outraged by the comments, though they were clearly in jest.

It’s the second contentious interview to emerge from the British press junket for ‘Avengers’.

Robert Downey Jr also stormed out of an interview with Krishnan Guru-Murthy after the Channel 4 presenter asked him about his private life.

‘'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'’ is in cinemas now.
