Robert Downey Jr Makes Racist Remark During ‘Avengers: Age of Utron’ Interview

To say the cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron is having a pretty rough start to their press tour is a huge understatement.

It all began when Robert Downey Jr stormed out of an interview with British journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy after the Channel 4 presenter asked him about his private life.

Then Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner were forced to release a statement to apologise for calling Scarlett Johannson’s character Black Widow a “slut” and “whore” in a promotional interview.

Now, Downey Jr is in hot water again.

The 50-year-old, who plays Iron Man Tony Stark in the film, has been accused of racism.

The incident happened when Downey Jr was asked by The Guardian what he thought of a comment by Oscar-winning Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu that superhero movies were “cultural genocide”.

Downey Jr responded with the comment: “Look I respect the heck out of him. I think for a man whose native tongue is Spanish to be able to put together a phrase like ‘cultural genocide’ just speaks to how bright he is.”

Many have responded with outrage on social media by saying the comment implies that native Spanish speakers can’t be as intelligent as English speakers.

‘'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'’ is in cinemas now.
