So, who votes for these awards?

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) established the Golden Globes in 1944.

The HFPA is a group of US-based photographers and journalists who report on the goings-on of the entertainment industry for news outlets predominately located outside of the U.S.

Currently, the HFPA is made up of about ninety members from approximately fifty-five different countries who have the very lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it) task of deciding who were the standout stars of the year in film and television.

What’s with the weird award categories?

OK, so Best Motion Picture – Drama is something we can all get a grip on. Pretty standard, right? The ‘serious’ flicks where actors get to flex their acting muscles.

But Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy? Surely that’s not a real category. Especially when you consider that some of the nominees that make the list aren’t even remotely comical or musical (who can forget that infamous ‘The Tourist’ nomination in 2011).

Note: Luckily, this year, we’ve been spared that embarrassment and all the nominees are actually relevant to the category.

When it comes to the nominees at the Globes, the unofficial motto is “everybody’s a winner”. The HFPA are notorious people-pleasers, who want to ensure that everybody gets a slice of the awards-season pie.

Which is actually kinda nice when you think about it, so we can’t really stay mad.

Who's the host this year – and are they any good?

Surprisingly, comedian Ricky Gervais will take the role as host this year - his fourth time hosting the show.

The Office star returns to the Globes stage for the first time in three years (from 2012 - 2015 the awards were hosted by hilarious BFFs Tina Fey and Amy Poehler).

If the general rule of the Globes is “everybody wins”, when it comes to hosting duties, the rule is most certainly “nobody is safe”…especially when it comes to Ricky.

The actor and comedian has managed to seriously offend most of Hollywood’s elite - remember that he introduced Bruce Willis as “Ashton Kutcher’s dad”? Ouch,

Prepare to see plenty of shots of celebs flashing their million-dollar smiles when their name is mentioned in their opening monologue…if only to be humiliated seconds later.

How do they stack up to the Oscars?

While no actor, director or writer would turn up their noses at a Golden Globe award (heck, we’ll take two!), the Globes are way more casual than the Academy Awards.

If the Academy Awards is Kate Winslet, the Globes would be your homegirl Jennifer Lawrence...or her new BFF Amy Schumer.

Dare we say it, the Globes are lot more fun and relaxed than their more serious counterparts: the drinks seem more free-flowing, the nerves are less intense and while you’ll still see straight-from-the-catwalk gowns, they can be a bit tighter, shorter and edgier than your typical Oscars getup.

To see all this in action, don’t forget to tune in from 10:30am AEDT on Monday for live coverage of the 73rd Golden Globes Awards. We hope you’re up for a good time.
