Watch the first trailer for 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'

Without wanting to get too excited about the whole thing, as it’s incredibly early days, it looks like it might just be amazing.

We’re introduced to Felicity Jones’ character for the first time, Jyn Erso, a rebel within the rebellion, who is being groomed for some key espionage work.

And that’s only a young Mon Mothma doing the recruiting, the revolutionary leader of the Alliance seen in Return of the Jedi in 1983.

From there it’s full-scale action, with exploding Stormtroopers, marauding AT-ATs in a sub-tropical landscape, and even some martial arts, in a galaxy in the grip of the Empire’s iron rule.

It feels like Star Wars meets Homeland.

The plot revolves around the Rebel spy mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, which lead up to the events of the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, in which the space station is ultimately destroyed by Luke and his X-Wing chums.

We also get our first glimpse of Forest Whitaker’s character (though there’s no name just yet), a grizzled Rebellion type.

Helmed by Godzilla's Gareth Edwards, he looks to be doing a sterling job for Lucasfilm.

It also stars Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and Alan Tudyk.

It’s due out on December 15.
