Director of creepy JonBenét' Ramsey doco speaks out

As the world prepares for the release of the eerie new Netflix documentary about JonBenét Ramsey, Casting JonBenét, the Australian director has spoken about why she made the film and why she was drawn to the famous murder.

The movie-length documentary delves into the tragic murder mystery that has gripped the world for 20 years, but tells it from a very different angle.

The project features real neighbours plus a crowd of local Colorado actors who are cast to re-enact the events that led up to the six-year-old pageant queen’s death.

Instead of casting just one person in each role, the parts are played by multiple actors- meaning we hear from six or seven Patsy Ramseys, and numerous Burke Rasmeys.

Award-winning Australian filmmaker Kitty Green says she made the unusual storytelling choice because “we didn’t only want to bring in actors; we also wanted people who had no acting experience at all.

“We actually talked to non-actors as much as we could. We were more interested in the community’s experience, in people who could relate to the crime or had some connection to it, more than people who simply looked like Patsy or John Ramsey. And even the actors weren’t full-time actors. They had other jobs.”

The whole pageant part of it, too, was so camp, so strange. I think the only way David Lynch could have made Twin Peaks weirder would have been if Laura Palmer had been 6, was killed on Christmas night, and a neighborhood Santa was a suspect."

Now, with the film finsihed and about to be screened, the director says she's happy with the result.

"After a screening recently, someone said to me, “You could have made a thousand JonBenet Ramsey movies, and you’ve made all of them.” I thought that summed it up – we’ve made everybody’s interpretation of what happened rather than just making one version. Casting JonBenet is a constellation of people’s opinions and interpretations. And if we’ve done that, that’s exactly what I wanted."
