Were the BRITs hacked?

Millions of Brits tune into the, er, BRITs every year to see the biggest and best artists winning awards and putting on killer performances.

So when The 1975 took to the stage to sing their hit “The Sound”, all eyes were on the winners of Best British Group to see if they’d live up to the hype.

But the band had people talking for a different reason!

Shortly after their set began, the screen turned pink and a series of insults were projected onto it.

“Is this a joke?” one message read, followed by: “Do people really still make music like this?”

“They’re essentially making robotic Huey Lewis tunes,” another comment read, while others slammed the “unconvincing emo lyrics” before saying: “This band thinks it has a charismatic singer…they are mistaken.”

Viewers freaked out that the awards broadcast had been hacked, and Twitter erupted with questions.

But the joke was on them! The band wasn’t being trolled – in fact, they were trolling everyone else.

The performance was a nod to the music video for the song, which features the same comments. The insults are actually real-life barbs thrown at them by their haters.

Their die-hard fans loved the stunt, and took to Twitter to set the record straight.

Turning the tables on your trolls? It's kind of a genius move.

Slow clap for The 1975!
