MKR: Josh’s fish fail
They’ve been talking big game since the first Instant Restaurant, so when it’s their turn to cook, Josh and Amy have the weight of expectation on their shoulders.
Josh has earned himself the nickname of “Seafood King” (or “King Jerk” if you ask Tully) thanks to his constant talk of all things fish.
“When it comes to cooking and preparing seafood, I would beat a five-star chef,” he says ever-so-modestly. “It’s better than restaurant quality.”
The couple are feeling chill and take their sweet time getting their entré of chorizo-stuffed squid to the table.
And by “sweet time”, we mean two freaking hours! The contestants and judges are starving, and it’s a wonder they haven’t resorted to eating each other at this point.
So when the squid comes out, there’s a lot of hype…and it’s hype the dish doesn’t live up to.
The stress from a lukewarm reaction follows Josh and Amy into the kitchen, and they have a frying fail with their fish and chips.
The chips are soggy and the barramundi doesn’t swim in the oil…it just sinks to the bottom.
“I can’t do this,” Josh wails, which is a far cry from the bravado he’s been spouting in every other episode so far. “Nothing’s working. I’m freaking out.”
Amy starts crying over the fries. “They’re soggy as anything,” she says as they scrap the beer batter idea for pan frying.
“This is the worst time of my life making fish and chips,” Amy sniffs. “I don’t want to look at their faces when we put it down in front of them.”
The contestants and judges can’t hide their shock as after another long wait, are delivered something vastly different to what was promised on the menu.
“I just want to apologise to everyone,” Josh says in a rare moment of humility. “I am ashamed.”
“Your dish is a disaster,” Pete hits back. “To me that’s not really what cooking is about.”
Meanwhile, the fish finally sends Alyse over the edge, and she excuses herself to use the facilities.
“Of all the fish in this competition, I never thought it would be Josh’s that would make me sick,” she says of the Seafood King.
They’ve got one dish to redeem themselves and Amy is in charge of the dessert, which is a family recipe called Cape brandy pudding.
Josh, standing around uselessly, feels the need to put his two cents in. Because his fish has gone down so well this evening!
“Just stop talking and do something,” she snaps. No Amy, that’s when things go wrong!
When the other teams and judges give them a grand total score of 43 out of a possible 110, it sinks the couple straight down to the bottom of the leaderboard.

“That’s the worst cooking I’ve ever done in my life,” Josh says to the group. “And that’s being honest.”
Oh, we believe you Josh!
