Cyn is MKR's queen villain

In the seemingly never-ending show that is MKR, it’s time to meet Group 3!

Giving the hardworking judges Manu Feildel and Pete Evans a break, Colin Fassnidge takes over judging duties. And he’s brought a mystery friend with him!

The faceless mate is soon revealed to be chef Darren Robertson, much to the guest teams’ excitement.

The first Instant Restaurant is in Melbourne, hosted by footy-playing blokes Chris and Mark. They’ve both got Italian heritage, so of course have been cooking as long as they could walk.

As the teams sit down in the AFL-themed space, they of course go through the traditional period of sizing each other up.

It’s pretty clear from the outset that our villain in this group is Cyn, who owns a law firm in NSW.

Backed up by her supportive mate Mell, she comes out with some zingers that give our fave villains Tyson and Josh a run for their money!

“I don’t even know what sport it is,” Cyn says disdainfully of Mark and Chris’ restaurant. “We don’t watch sport unless our children are involved and we’re forced to sit there and watch it.”

Caitie and Demi, two besties from Melbourne, are obsessed with “fun, food and fashion”. As Cyn points out, “I feel like they’re really really young. Like, possibly I could have given birth to them.”

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, drama is going down. Mark feels the pressure of his Italian heritage as he attempts to nail the spaghetti with pipis dish for the entré.

“An Italian stuffing up pasta, my [late] Nonno would be spitting chips.”

Well, Nonno won’t be stoked, because the overcooked spaghetti is a bit of a miss.

The pressure of a lukewarm reaction to the entré puts the pressure on the mates to really serve up an amazing main.

They’re cooking swordfish, so they need to perfect the cooking time – it’s a huge risk and the look on their faces as they watch the judges eat is priceless. You can feel their despair through the telly!

The judges love the fish, but of course Cyn isn’t impressed. “It just wasn’t what I expected to get. It's not what I ordered. I wouldn’t be raving to anybody about it.”

The boys dash back into the kitchen to prepare their OTT dessert, which involves lots of technical skill. As Colin says, “If these two footy players can pull off a choc melting ball, I’ll take my hat off to them.”

Mark and Chris run into trouble trying to get their tempered chocolate out of the moulds, which sees them bashing it on the bench in a vain attempt to save their dessert.

Victory is theirs! The chocolate gods are smiling on them, and the chocolate finally comes out.

But will it do its desired melt effect upon serving? It's a nailbiter!

“That was a showstopper,” Darren says of the dessert. “Like a good footy team, you picked up your game.”

Though Mark and Chris score a very pleasing score of 70, the villainous Cyn isn’t rattled.

“I don’t have a problem critiquing other teams’ food. We have a high standard of what we expect ourselves to produce,” she says, with shades of Tyson from Group 1. “We feel comfortable with that we’re putting out. We’re aiming for 90.”

QLD contestant Brett, who is teamed up with his wife Marie, throws out that he’s aiming for 95. “I’m confident in my ability.”
