Logies viewers worried for Molly Meldrum

Molly Meldrum's appearance on stage alongside Gold Logie winner Samuel Johnson had viewers concerned for his wellbeing after he interrupted Sam's heartfelt speech and started making his own.

Molly suffered a brain injury in 2011 after fracturing his skull in a fall from a ladder at his home. He also punctured his lung and broke ribs.

In January 2016 Molly again badly injured himself, dislodging vertebrae in a fall in Bangkok, Thailand and ending up in emergency surgery.

As Samuel started his thankyous for the prestigious award, won for his portrayal of Molly in the Channel Seven miniseries Molly, his on-screen alter ego appeared on stage and took control of the microphone.

Pushing Samuel out of the way, Molly said, “Ah, can I just tell you something that you never do as an actor, or as a TV presenter?”

“You never say ‘um’, ‘er’, ‘um, ‘er’ - alright keep going!”

The moment was met with laughs from the audience, which only got louder when Molly swore, saying, “do yourself a f***ing favour!” before giving Samuel back the mic.

It wasn’t much longer before Molly was back in the spotlight however, and the veteran TV presenter went on to hand Samuel – who played him in the TV mini series Molly – a golden cowboy hat.

“I know it was very hard to play an old drama queen like myself,” he said, “So on behalf of the drama queen of Australia, I’d like to crown you also with my gold hat.”

He proceeded to give a rambling and at times incoherent speech of his own, prompting viewers to express concern over social media. While some joked that Molly was too drunk, others were quick to remind them of his accident.
