It’s the most talked-about show of 2017, and the stars of 13 Reasons Why have upped the controversy with a raunchy, bloody shoot for V Magazine.
Four actors from the Netflix hit posed for edgy pics and spoke to V about the show, discussing the recently-announced second season, the series’ executive producer Selena Gomez and the graphic scenes that were slammed by some mental health professionals.
Brandon Flynn, who plays Justin in the show, is featured in one of the images covered in blood with his castmates Alisha Boe (who plays Jessica) and Tommy Dorfman (Ryan) both licking his face.
In the interview, Brandon shrugs off the negative reaction to the show’s graphic depiction of suicide and sexual assault, saying: “I know there is controversy behind our show and I think that's great, just as great as the love people have for it. I think you know you're doing something important when people have problems with it.”
Tommy agrees that “it’s important for teenagers, young adults, parents, teachers, really everyone to see what the true high school experience is.”
Michele Selene Ang (who stars as Courtney) also features in the shoot, and took the opportunity to rave about the mental health advocacy of executive producer Selena Gomez.
“She came to visit set on the last day of filming for Season 1 and it made an emotional day all the more poignant,” the actress recalls.
“I’m personally thankful for her advocacy, because it’s not only a big part of why I have my job, but because I think we are starting to see a shift in how we talk about depression and anxiety. She leads by example.”
As for the next season, Alisha just hopes there will be “justice for Hannah”, while Michele points out that “there were so many cliffhangers [last season].
“I think each “reason” will have the opportunity to explore newer facets of themselves and their lives outside of the tapes,” she told the publication.
“Will Jessica and Justin ever get back together? Will Bryce own up to his actions? Will Jessica tell the truth about that night at the party? What does Tyler plan to do with all of that ammunition? What will happen to Alex? It goes on and on.”
The second season of 13 Reasons Why will stream on Netflix in 2018.
