That Arya and Nymeria scene in GoT explained

Warning: contains spoilers for episode two.

A hell of a lot happened on the second episode of Game of Thrones’ seventh season last night.

Between eunuch sex, a particularly visceral removal of Greyscale, the impending meeting of Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and the demise of the Sand Snakes, there were many things to take in.

But one scene in particular had viewers scratching their heads – the reunion between Arya (Maisie Williams) and her direwolf, Nymeria. Check out the moment in the video above.

While on her way to Winterfell after learning that her favourite brother Jon is King in the North, Arya runs into a wolfpack led by a huge direwolf.

She quickly recognises the creature as her own direwolf, Nymeria, who she had to send away in the second episode of Season One after the wolf bit Joffrey (on the arm and he demanded she be killed.

It was a heartbreaking moment which saw young Arya throwing stones at her direwolf friend in an effort to make her leave.

So it’s not surprise that Season Seven Arya wants to make amends, and she asks the now fully-grown Nymeria to join her journey to Winterfell.

But after a moment the wolf turns and walks away, taking her wolfpack with her.

Despite the snub, Arya smiles in understanding and says: “That’s not you.”

Wait, what?! Clearly that wolf was Nymeria, so what did Arya mean by that comment?

Well, the GoT showrunners have explained all - and it will break your heart a little bit!

“’That’s not you’ is a direct reference to what Arya herself said to her father when her father painted this picture for her as a lady of a castle and marrying some lord and wearing some frilly dress,” D.B Weiss explained in a post-show discussion, quoted by The Independent.

“Arya’s not domesticated and it makes total sense her wolf wouldn’t be either,” he adds.

“Once the wolf walks away, at first she’s heartbroken to have come this close. Then she realises the wolf is doing exactly what she would do if she were that wolf.”
