The backlash against US Vogue's controversial Hurricane Sandy editorial spread, entitled 'Storm Troupers' and photographed by Annie Leibovitz, continues to grow.

The photo shoot, published in the magazine's February 2013 edition, shows models including Karlie Kloss and Joan Smalls dressed in luxury clothes by designers including Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang alongside the emergency workers who worked so hard to help the city survive the massive storm.

Many observers have labelled the spread tasteless and inappropriate, highlighting the incongruity of photographing luxury fashion against the backdrop of the storm's destruction when New York residents continue to face hardship caused by the hurricane's aftermath.

The Vogue website's introduction of the spread plays the famous resilience of New Yorkers. 'When Hurricane Sandy hit, the city’s bravest and brightest punched back', it reads. 'With the area now on the mend, we paid these stalwart souls a visit, dressed up in the best of the New York collections. Call them New York’s other finest.'

Website Slate called the editorial 'awful' and queried the wisdom of relegating hard-working New Yorkers to the role of photo shoot props.

'Did Leibovitz not realize that the real, non-model people in her lens were 20,000 times more captivating and alive than the models or the clothes?' asks writer Katherine Goldstein.

Hurricane Sandy hit New York on October 29, following a destructive journey along America's eastern seaboard. The Category 2 storm affected 24 states in the US and caused an estimated $63 billion worth of damage.

Prior to landing in the US, the hurricane wreaked havoc in Jamaica, Haiti (were 54 people died in the storm), the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, and Cuba, which suffered $2 billion in damage.
