Almost immediately a host of people hit back on Twitter, with many slamming the rapper for the insensitive tweet.

"Imagine if a white singer said "WHITE WOMEN ONLY"?" one person tweeted.

"Hmm @ multiracial women only. Does that include the dark skinned multiracial women or just the light skinned ones?" another wrote.

"This is a major issue. In an industry that consistently cuts Black models out, you do this?! You are the absolute worst. Truly" yet another tweeter said.

However, despite the backlash, over 500 models flocked to a casting for the rapper's New York Fashion Week show at the weekend.

The 'All Day' rapper is due to showcase his latest collection on Wednesday, and hundreds of women queued outside Jack Studio in New York on Monday for the chance to get their big break.

Jada Berthoumieux, 16, had never modelled before but travelled from New Jersey and was in the queue by 9am because it would mean "everything" to walk the runway for Kanye.

She said: "It would mean everything [to be in this show].

"I've been wanting to model for a really long time now and it's just exposure. I'm just really excited right now."

For Casey Waller, an 18-year-old actress and part-time model, she was attracted to the "empire of Kanye West" and admitted she thinks the 39-year-old star's unique vision means he could offer a chance to anyone.

She told WWD: "He's so different from everyone else. I just think this is such an interesting show. I feel like any girl could do it, whether you're six feet tall size zero, or size four. There's just an opportunity with him."

Another hopeful, Saima, headed straight to the audition from work as she was determined not to miss out, having been too late for Kanye's open casting last season.

She said: "I was on a work shift from the Hamptons, that's why I have all my suitcases with me.

"What brought me here was that the past three seasons have been to-die-for. I tried to come last season, but I came too late, so this is my second try."
