What it's like having your period during Fashion Week

Fashion Week is no walk in the park.

It might look seemlessly pretty with all the girls draped in jewels and high fashion outfits on the runway, but little do we know what models go through to get there.

Model Victoria Cain, 19, reveals what it’s really like behind of all the “glitz and glam" at London Fashion Week (LFW) .

More specifically, the blonde bombshell spoke about what it’s like to have your period during fashion week, and all we can say is thank goodness we didn’t end up in the modelling industry.

In an interview with the Independent, Cain said during a photoshoot once she “got a surprise [period] attack in the middle of the day and had to fake a cigarette break and go to find a shop.”

Scouted at 13, the British model says it stresses her out to think there’s a chance she might “leak on the clothes,” or that her string would stick out.

“My absolute worst nightmare would be leaking on the runway,” she confesses, “[It] would be a super embarrassing moment,” she adds.

Speaking about LFW, the 5ft 10inch model says between the early starts, auditions, fittings, runway show and before and after-parties, there isn’t any time to eat, let alone change your tampon.

“Fashion week is just castings, castings, castings, castings,” she says, and you’re in line with “hundreds of other girls for long periods of time to be seen for jobs, [it] means that leaking is common.”

“It’s hard to find five minutes to do what you’ve got to do,” says Cain.

Cain landed a modelling contract at 16 and has since worked with L’Oreal, Rimmel and Toni & Guy to name a few and says she’s now learned her lesson - to always carry tampons - after some unpleasant experiences.

“It’s horrible because you can feel it and you can’t go to the toilet because you lose your spot. You think, do I lose a possible job or wait for another half an hour? So you just put up with the leakiness.”

If having your period during fashion week doesn’t sound bad enough, Cain says there’s also the risk of her skin breaking out in acne and her belly bloating due to water retention.

“The thing that stresses me out most about getting my period during fashion week is my acne-prone skin,” she confesses, and like the majority of us, says she “can eat for England.”

Cain tries to avoid important castings when it’s that time of the month because of the fear she might not land a show at all, given the scrutiny models face and the fiercely competitive nature of the industry.

Boy, aren’t you glad your job allows you to freely scoot to the bathroom whenever you want?
