Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress raises £10m

More than 600,000 people flocked to Buckingham Palace to see the Duchess of Cambridge’s bridal gown over a 10-week period.

Far exceeding the 1994 record of 420,000 visitors, it has been estimated that the crowds collectively spent £10.5m on tickets (at £17.50 per person) and an untold fortune in official Palace gift stores.

The revenue generated from the dress display will mostly go towards the Royal Collection, which maintains the Royal family’s artwork and valuables, but Kate has insisted that a portion of the money will be donated to the charitable foundation the she and her husband set up in lieu of wedding gifts.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Collection told The Telegraph: "We've enjoyed welcoming visitors from all over the world to Buckingham Palace in record numbers this summer. It has been an incredibly busy few months and we're delighted that it's been such a huge success."

While this year the Palace was open for two weeks more than a normal year, in 2012 the Palace will go back to it’s normal summer opening times, and entry fee will be raised to £18.

The Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen creation, however, will not be on display for another few years as it’s delicate lacework may be subject to damage.
