Skinny mannequins will be a thing of the past at one department store from now on.

Target has introduced size 16 mannequins across its stores to represent the diversity of Australian women.

At least two mannequins will be displayed in 49 of the company’s stores, starting with its Chadstone store on Thursday.

Target Australia managing director Stuart Machin says it was “baffling that the Australian retail industry still uses a standard size 8 mannequin” when the average woman was a size 14.

He said the real-sized mannequins would help every-day women to accurately see what clothes will look like on themselves and on a body that they can identify with.

After Chadstone, Target will install the mannequins in stores including Melbourne CBD, Penrith, Chadstone, Bondi, Geelong, Midland, Chermside, Brisbane CBD, Joondalup and Perth.
