Sportscraft Unveils New Australian Olympic Uniform

This morning, Sportscraft unveiled the Olympic uniforms to be worn by Aussie athletes at the Rio opening ceremony at Bondi's iconic Icebergs – with some surprises.

While the green and gold theme is evident throughout, it’s clear Sportscraft is pushing the preppy look via pinstripe blazers and Merino wool knits paired with crips white shirts and TOMS boat shoes.

The Australian fashion house created a few accessories for the athletes too: a silk scarf for the girls, a tie for the boys plus a unisex belt and sunglasses.

This is Sportscraft's seventh time as the official supplier of the Opening Ceremony uniforms for the Australian Olympic team, and they've done a great job making this year's design unique, comfortable and lightweight - perfect for Rio's hot climate.

Speaking with Yahoo7 Lifestyle, canoe slalom Olympian Jessica Fox said she loves the uniform for it's "light and fresh" aesthetic.

"[Sportscraft have] gone for a vintage look, drawing on inspiration from previous Olympic uniforms like Paris 1924," Fox said.

"They had blazers too. It's got that green and gold feel, it’s very Aussie, but also very Rio - it’s fun."

While the fashion brand went for a traditional, sharply tailored cotton blazer with green trim and a gold coat of arms badge, the lining inside is anything but.

In a nostalgic nod to Australia's past 107 gold medallists, each athlete's name features on the lining.

"It's really special," Fox says.

Plus, in a modern twist, the jackets are uniquely designed to accommodate the athletes' iPhones.

Beijing Diving gold medallist Matthew Mitcham described the uniform as "very gen Y."

This year 21-year-old Jessica Fox will aim for her second Olympic Medal after taking home silver in London's 2012 Olympics.

While she can't wait to race in Rio, Fox said she is also looking forward to experiencing the vibrant city.

"London had an incredible atmosphere and Rio is going to be a bit more of a fiesta feel so I’m excited to get there and race," she told Yahoo7.

Fox will travel to Rio in April to train for the Games, however she won't have the opportunity to see the course until the day before the race.

"We don't get to practice the set gate combination on the river that is set for [the Games], so we get there a bit beforehand and learn the course and the features of the river. Then we see the course design the day before and analyse it from the bank," Fox says.

Beyond the physical practice, Fox admits training involves mental preparation.

"You have to analyse videos, visualise and trust yourself and your capabilities," the young athlete says.

While Fox tries to stay clear of superstitions, she does have one lucky charm she relies on.

"I always plait my hair before a race. It’s worked for me in the past so I stick with it," she says.

The 2016 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony kicks off Friday 5 August in the Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro.
