Father and son face $70K bill after trashing plane
A drunken father and son duo are facing a huge fine after forcing a plane to make an emergency landing.
The plane was on its way to Cuba but had to make an emergency landing in Canada when the pair smashed their iPad and threatened air hostesses after they were denied more beers.
The incident happened on board a charter flight by German airline Condor, from Frankfurt to the Cuban beach resort of Varadero.
The two men, 26-year-old Niko and his 47-year-old father Alexandros, ordered multiple beers on board the Boeing 767. They were also joined by another passenger they had met before departure.
Crew members soon refused to give the three passengers more beers as they felt they were too intoxicated.
“There were squabbles and brawls. I admit, we did misbehave,” said Niko, who has since spoken about his behaviour.
According to Niko, his father became so angry after being refused more beers that he even took his own iPad and smashed it in two.
One of the three men even stormed towards the galley where he reportedly threatened and intimidated one of the air hostesses.
Due to the risky situation in the cabin, the pilots of the Condor flight decided to make an emergency landing en route at Halifax International Airport in Nova Scotia, Canada.
The three men were taken off the plane by Canadian cops and put in jail for the night.
They were charged with dangerous behaviour under the Aeronautic Act for Probation the next day.
“If somebody forces a plane to make an emergency landing, they are going to jail. This message has to be clear,” Judge Dan MacRury said. “Their days behind bars are hopefully a sufficient deterrent.”
Niko spent a week in jail and has since returned to Frankfurt, while his father and the other man are still locked up.
“We still have to pay a fine of 25,000 CAD [$25,000] for my father,” he said.
Niko and his father can expect an even higher bill from Condor.
“We will claim the costs incurred from those who caused it,” a Condor spokesman said.
According to local media, the costs for the emergency landing will be at least 30,000 EUR ($45,000).
