Fears bitter royal feud will derail Princess Eugenie's wedding
There’s nothing like a big family occasion to reignite long-held grudges, and the royal family is no different, with reports Princess Eugenie’s wedding is set to bring up the feud between Prince Philip and Sarah Ferguson.
With the moment Princess Eugenie ties the knot to wine merchant Jack Brooksbank just hours away, insiders are waiting to see if there will be tension between the former family members – and whether the Duke of Edinburgh will even attend.
Prince Philip is said to have blacklisted Fergie from the family after her infamous toe-sucking scandal with financial adviser John Bryan in 1992, which hit the headlines while she was still married to Prince Andrew.
The animosity remains to this day, with latest reports revealing Prince Philip made sure to avoid Fergie during her recent stay at the Queen’s Balmoral holiday house, ensuring he arrived 45 minutes after the mum-of-two had left for the airport.
“Her Majesty often has the Duchess for a few days at Balmoral early in her annual summer holiday there, but Prince Philip does not like being in the same building as her,” a royal source told the Mail on Sunday.
“He just can’t bring himself to forgive her for some of the outrageous things she has done.”
There’s talk Prince Philip, who officially retired from public duties last year and suffers from ill health, might completely skip Princess Eugenie’s wedding.
The 97-year-old attended Prince Harry’s May wedding to Meghan Markle, having undergone hip surgery just six weeks earlier. It was also later revealed the Duke of Edinburgh had fallen in the bath days before the ceremony, and was struggling with the pain of a cracked rib.
“He does what he wants,” an insider told PEOPLE.
“He made a supreme effort for Harry. I would be very surprised if he did go [to Eugenie’s wedding], because he is so estranged from Fergie.”
