Imagine a coffee so strong the barista checks you over for heart issues or high blood pressure before he serves you.

That’s exactly what’s happening at Adelaide café Viscous Coffee, which is serving up The Asskicker aka the strongest iced coffee in Australia.

For those of you who love caffeine, the largest size of this beverage behemoth contains four shots of espresso, four 48-hour-brewed cold-drip ice cubes, 120 ml of 10-day-brewed cold drip with four more cold-drip ice-cubes. Oh, and some steamed milk to take the edge off.

It will also set you back $16, but according to café owner Steve Benington, this coffee is meant to be sipped over the course of a day or two – and not sculled on the way to work.

“The idea came about from a regular customer, a nurse from the local hospital who was called in for an emergency night shift and needed something to stay alert,” Steve tells Broadsheet. “It took her two days to finish the drink, and it kept her up for three.”

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand reports that 210 mg per day – or three cups of instant coffee – can lead to increased levels of anxiety in adults.

For those keen to try The Asskicker, you’ll be ingesting 25 times more caffeine than that.

Steve admits he carefully assesses Asskicker drinkers, and at the moment, sells about two to three a week.

"For a first timer, I try and talk them out of it, and if I’m able to, then they’re not ready for it,” he says.
