Although it sounds too good to be true, inventor Professor David Nutt of Imperial College claims the new drink labeled “alcosynth” provides all the positive effects of alcohol, without the nasty side effects.

Professor Nutt claims alcosynth lasts a couple of hours, and users are limited to how “drunk” they can feel, with four or five drinks seeing the effect “max out”.

“We know a lot about the brain science of alcohol; it's become very well understood in the last 30 years,” said Professor Nutt tells the Independent.

“So we know where the good effects of alcohol are mediated in the brain, and can mimic them. And by not touching the bad areas, we don't have the bad effects.”

While there’s still lots of testing to be done, Professor Nutt has hopes alcosynth could replace normal alcohol by 2050, and help ease the effect of alcohol-related illnesses on society.

“It will be there alongside the scotch and the gin, they'll dispense the alcosynth into your cocktail and then you'll have the pleasure without damaging your liver and your heart,”
