Study shows eating cheese with wine actually does make it taste better

We've been saying it for years but finally there's now a study to back up the fact that cheese makes wine taste better.

So if you're not having some brie with your sauvignon blanc or camembert with your merlot then you may want to reconsider.

According to a new study by the Journal of Food Science, having a plate of cheese with your tipple of choice " had an impact on dominance, duration of attributes and on preference for most wines".

Researchers called on 31 wine and cheese connoisseurs and regular customers from the Dijon region of France to taste how a glass of Pacherenc, Sancerre, Bourgogne and Madiran matched with Epoisses, Comté, Roquefort, Crottin de Chavignol cheese.

They found that none of the cheese had a negative impact on the wines and in fact some of them reduced the bitterness of the drink.

"Thanks to our research we learned that the duration of the perception of astringency of a certain wine could be reduced after having cheese and that the four evaluated cheeses had the same effect", lead author Mara V Galmarini said:

"In short, when having a plate of assorted cheeses, the wine will probably taste better no matter which one they choose."

While the researches did say that the study was too small to make significant observations, they did notice a major difference with the wines before and after consuming the cheese.
