Newlyweds purposely serve off food at wedding

The wedding dress has been found, the big-day venue booked and for most couples who are set to tie the knot, the next big splurge is how much to splash out on food and drink at the reception.

For Seigo Robinson, 31, and Romilde Kotzé, 32, feeding their guests didn’t break the bank in the slightest after they decided to serve off food at their wedding.

That’s right, the pair dished up food past its expiry date to their guests who had no idea what was going to be served up.

Bucking the trend for a lavish three-course, ‘steak or fish’ type affair, the couple turned to food charity, Foodcycle Cambridge, to cater their nuptials.

The Cambridge News reports diners chowed down on macaroni cheese, pizzas, mushroom goulash, Thai lettuce cups, apple pies and scones.

At a cost of about $12.50 per guest, the newlyweds were able to penny pinch while satisfying their passion for minimising waste.

“The wedding dress was second hand, our rings are cheap Roman rings from an antiques store, and our bunting was made from recovered textiles,” Seigo told the Cambridge News.

"Most other things were hired rather than bought, so they would continue to have many more cycles of use after our wedding."
