There’s nothing more satisfying than a melted cheese toastie, but what if there was one ingredient already in your fridge that could elevate your humble sarnie to something truly special?

While the toastie might be your go-to when you don’t feel like making dinner, food writer Tristan Lutze’s easy hack might just change the way you see this easy staple.

According to the food writer, there’s one thing we should all be spreading on bread before subjecting it to your jaffle maker or preferred toastie implement – and it’s not butter.

Reach for your trusty jar of mayonnaise.

According to Tristan, this delicious spread can help you brown your bread evenly (meaning no crusty burnt bits) which gives you enough time to get an even melt on your cheese.

“While butter splits into oil and solids, the latter of which burns quickly against the hotplate, mayonnaise is perfectly emulsified, meaning no more blackened patches,” Tristan wrote on news.com.au.

“And whole egg mayonnaise — the kind you buy in a jar — has the same ratio of salt, so you won’t be sacrificing any flavour.
