Why are people ditching skim milk?

From full-fat milk to almond milk, coconut milk and skim milk – it’s hard to know which one is best for you.

However, with reports today saying there’s a butter shortage on the way, it’s been claimed one of the reason why has to do with people giving up skim milk.

Skim milk - which is created when the cream layer used to make butter from milk had been removed - has long been seen as a healthy alternative to drinking full-fat.

However, according to news.com.au, experts believe there’s been a shift in how people consume dairy, with more and more consumers gravitating back towards full-fat milk.

For years we’ve been told that skim milk is healthier, however, now nutritionists say there's a case for drinking both skim and full-fat milk.

A nutritionist has claimed that skim is better for weight control, whereas full-fat is for people who have no weight issues.

“Fat is required for nutrient absorption and satiety which are good reasons to choose full cream milk and if you have no weight concerns then this would be the best choice,” nutritionist Pip Reed told HuffPost Australia.

“Skim milk is significantly lower in calories, lower in fat and slightly higher in protein -- so if it is weight control you are looking for this is a better option.”

A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology last year also claimed that there’s a link between people who drink skim milk and acne.

It found that consumers who drank a lot of skim milk were more prone to the spot-causing virus, while those who drank full-fat weren’t as prone to it.
