Why alcohol makes you more attractive

A new study has found that the mere thought of having consumed alcohol can make you feel more attractive.

French scientists looked at the link between alcohol and self-confidence with two experiments, and found it's not just how many drinks you have had, but rather how many drinks you think you have had that increases your confidence in your own appearance.

The first experiment was held in a local bar where on a scale of one to seven, 19 people were asked to rate their attractiveness during which their alcohol levels were measured. They found that the higher amount of alcohol drunk was equal to an increase in the self-confidence of the testee.

The second experiment demonstrated that confidence didn't all come down to the physical effects of alcohol itself. The scientists asked 94 men to drink a new fruit cocktail, telling the men that half would be given an alcoholic version, while the other half would have a placebo. Regardless of who actually had the alcohol, those who had thought they had alcohol gave themselves a higher self-assessment compared to those who believed they hadn't, giving themselves a low self-assessment.

Lead psychologist of the study, Laurent Begue, said, "Our study shows that the mere fact of believing that you have drunk alcohol makes you feel more attractive. The alcohol dose has no effect in itself."

The study explained that the results were an example of "alcohol-related expectancy", which means the more that people drink, the more comfortable they feel around others and consequently, feel better about themselves.

"The concept of alcohol is linked to social lubrication, to making you feel at ease with others," Begue added.
