If this is your drink of choice you might be a psychopath

It’s one of those drinks you either love or hate.

But for those of us who jump at the chance to sip a gin and tonic, a new study says your drink choice might say more about you - and your psychopathic tendencies - than you think.

Sounds dramatic (and utterly terrifying for the non G&T drinkers out there), but researchers at Innsbruck University in Austria studied almost 1000 people and found those who love bitter foods also tend to have darker personality.

The experiment saw 500 people shown a list of foods ranging from sweet, salty, sour and bitter.

Participants ranked how much they liked each taste, and then completed personality quizzes which included questions along the lines of “Given enough provocation, I may hit someone”, and “I enjoy tormenting people”. Yikes.

Researchers repeated the experiment again and found the same results: people who liked bitter foods such as radishes, strong coffee and quinine (found in tonic water) were also the people who scored higher on the creepy answer scale.

“General bitter taste preferences emerged as a robust predictor for Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism and everyday sadism,” wrote researchers.

While scientists don’t know exactly why there’s a link, some have speculated that poisonous plants in the wild tend to be bitter, so it may be those with darker personalities get a bit of a kick from eating bitter foods.

Who knows. Either way, we’re going to take some serious notes next time we’re ordering a round at the bar…
