Eating ice cream for brekky makes you smarter, claims study

Japanese professor Yoshihiko Koga has made a discovery that will no doubt alarm nutritionists.

The lecturer at Tokyo’s Kyorin University found that eating ice cream first thing in the morning can improve alertness and mental performance, reports the Daily Mail.

This is definitely something we can get on board with!

In the study, participants ate ice cream on waking before carrying out a series of mental tasks, and it was found that they had faster reaction times than those who hadn’t eaten the cold treat.

Baffled by the results, the scientist then repeated the test with ice-cold water to see if it was down to temperature.

And while those who drank water did perform better, it was nowhere near as well as those who had eaten ice cream.

Yoshihiko is yet to discover why ice cream boosts brainpower, but some researchers suggest it could be down to the glucose in the ice cream, which is essential for brain function.

That, or it may be psychological.

This comes after it was reported that chocolate cake for breakfast is becoming a hot new food trend.

According to food trend expert Liz Moskow, the benefits of cocoa - especially in the morning - could soon see us ditching our normal brekky options for something a lot more tasty.

“There was a study that recently came out from Syracuse University re-touting the benefits of dark chocolate, specifically on cognitive function – abstract reasoning, memory, focus,” Liz tells Food Business News.

“The thought was eating chocolate prepares you more for your work day. So what better day part to incorporate dark chocolate into your meal than breakfast?”
