Friend speaks out on Wiggles stars Emma and Lachlan's shock split

Wiggles fans have been rocked by the announcement that stars Emma Watkins and Lachlan Gillespie have called time on their relationship two and a half years after tying the knot.

And it seems their followers weren’t the only ones shocked by the news. An unnamed ‘friend’ has revealed that they were also completely blindsighted by the split, as the pair seemed happy and affectionate when they caught up recently.

“It [the separation] came as a complete shock,” the mate told News Corp.

They went on to reveal that the cause for the split was likely embedded in Emma and Lachlan’s strong friendship.

“There’s no doubt they still love each other very much and they’re in a good place, they just feel they’ll be better as best friends,” they said.

On Friday, Emma revealed the pair had been living separately over the past six months – during which time Emma underwent surgery for endometriosis – and that they had amicably decided to go their separate ways.

“We have, and continue to share, the most beautiful life together,” Emma’s statement posted on Instagram said.

“We have embraced this as a very positive change in our relationship. Our incredible friendship has been strengthened throughout this time.

“We have chosen a different path to travel in our personal lives, but please know that we are stronger than ever and we can’t wait to see you at a show soon.”

Emma and Lachlan tied the knot in April 2016 in Bowral, NSW, and despite their separation said that their professional lives won’t be affected by their relationship status.

In her statement, Emma said the pair had performed hundreds of shows together during their trial separation, and that they both continue to share a love of performing with the Wiggles.
