Furious mum’s letter to rude shopper who mocked her young son

When young mum Hannah Sewell decided to treat her four-year-old son Caden to his favourite treat of apples while out at the supermarket, little did she realise she’d spark an encounter with another shopper that would leave her son heartbroken.

In a viral letter addressed to the “the woman in Aldi that made my son and me feel like complete s**t today” Hannah revealed the insulting behaviour another customer levelled towards her son.

“I’m sorry you felt that my son being excited about getting a bag of his favorite apples and jumping up and down beside me was such a big deal that you needed to ask me to ‘control my kid because people are trying to shop’,” Hannah posted in an open letter on Facebook.

“When I told you that he can’t help it and was just excited, and even apologized to you, you decided to roll your eyes and cut me off.”

Hannah then went on to call out the customer for leaning down to get closer to her son, with Caden – who had previously been afraid of strangers – excited the shopper was going to say hi. Instead, the woman insulted the four-year-old to his face.

“Instead of saying hi, you got close to his face and asked him ‘What is wrong with you, does your mommy never take you anywhere?’”

With Caden, who is unable to talk not responding, Hannah tried to explain the situation to the woman, who responded: “No surprise there, he can’t even walk through a store”.

Devastated, Hannah left her groceries where they were and walked out with her son to escape the situation.

In a bit to try and cheer him up, the South Carolina mum took Caden to his favourite fast food store for a meal of nuggets and apple slices – but was left heartbroken when he refused to eat.

“But he didn’t get excited,” Hannah wrote. “He didn’t smile or jump. He just sat there with the saddest f**king look on his face while he picked at his food. I hope you’re happy with yourself.”

Hannah’s post – and the image of Caden’s heartbreakingly sad face – has since been shared over 180,000 times with messages of support flooding in from around the world.

“I can’t believe the responses we’ve been getting,” Hannah tells Be. “After it happened I literally cried for like a day and a half.”

Hannah says Caden was still upset when they got home later that day.

“I didn’t even post the picture of him after we got home,” she tells us. “I sent it to my husband when he asked if Caden was any better.”

The sad look in the boy’s eyes prompted people from all over the world to reach out to the mum and send messages of support to Caden.

“I’m crying at work I’m so sorry someone did this to your child,” wrote one commenter. “I’d send this kid every bag of apples I could get my hands on if I didn’t have to see this sad little face.”

“I’m so heartbroken for you,” wrote another. “For some stranger to break the pure innocent heart of a child for no reason than to be ugly is so, so low. I wish I could hug both of you right now.”
